This
striking Adam Hughes cover was not the original intended composition. An early
concept sketch depicted Devastation holding an impaled Wonder Woman aloft on
her sword (see left). Notice that the sheath is still shown as empty on the
final colour version. It is unknown why this version was dropped, though perhaps
DC felt it a little too graphic in its depiction of an apparently slain Wonder
Woman.
Such sensistivity obviously did not apply when John Byrne and Jerry Ordway drew
their cover for JLA #210, which depicts Superman standing
over a mortally wounded Diana who lies on the floor having been impaled with
a sword.
